P2P activity has come up as the most consistent indicator for finding out who the most tech-savvy media consumers are watching and listening to on the Internet.
To determine the most-traded files in the world of P2P, Wired News collaborated with BigChampagne Online Media Measurement, a Los Angeles-based firm which tracks media-consumption trends across all digital channels.
Focussing exclusively on P2P traffic, BigChampagne has compiled what can be called the most accurate list of the Top Music Artists of 2007 , using data from all the major file-trading protocols and networks, including BitTorrent, Gnutella and eDonkey.
Surprisingly, the Top Music Artists of 2007 list was primarily made up of singles artists, with T. I. ruling the P2P rankings.
American hip-hop and R&B singer T-Pain bagged the second spot, ahead of Senegalese-American singer Akon at the third place.
The fourth position went to rapper 50 Cent, while “Rise Up” hitmaker R. Kelly landed the fifth place.
Lil Wayne, Justin Timberlake, Fergie, Ludacris, and Snoop Dogg rounded off the top ten.
"Songs are the new currency online. The volume of downloads for individual songs dwarfs the downloading of albums,” Wired News quoted BigChampagne co-founder and CEO Eric Garland, as saying.
Top Music Artists of 2007 on P2P are:
1. T. I.
2. T-Pain
3. Akon
4. 50 Cent
5. R. Kelly
6. Lil Wayne
